My name is Zaleha. I’ll be writing in English or Bahasa Malaysia in this column. Recently, I did a test translation for a local translation company after which they contacted me and told me they wanted me to be part of their team of freelance translators for a website translation project. Well and good. Although the payment rate offered was extremely low, they persuaded me that it’ll be a large project. I duly informed them that I’d be ready to start as soon as I got a written confirmation of the offer incorporating all the terms that we had agreed upon. Unfortunately, that was the last communication we had. The company never contacted me again.

I got a little curious about the test translation that I did and so I checked out a particular website. Lo and behold! True to my suspicion my translated text had been used. I guess there was nothing I could do about it, since there wasn’t any agreement that the test translation that I did was to be part of a paid translation. Even though I don’t regret that the company has not contacted me for that so-called large project, I do feel a little resentment towards their attitude. They could have at least informed me. Have you had such experiences yourself? What did you do?
